At Uglyroof, we’ve taken our formulation through independent, third-party laboratory testing against the same ASTM and UL standards used to evaluate new shingles. And more importantly, we now have years of real-world performance behind us — roofs treated over five years ago that are still performing exactly as they should.
Here’s what the testing shows, what it means for your roof, and why the field results matter just as much as the lab results.
Tested by Independent Labs, Not by Us
Our testing was performed by independent laboratories — including Intertek, one of the most respected product testing organizations in the world. Treated and untreated shingles, both new and aged, from the same sam were evaluated side by side. That last part matters: testing aged, weathered shingles is the real test of a rejuvenation product, because that’s the shingle condition our product is designed to treat.
Here’s what the results showed.
Pliability Restored (ASTM D3462)
Asphalt shingles fail when they get brittle. As the oils in asphalt deplete over time, shingles lose their flexibility — and a brittle shingle cracks, tears, and sheds granules instead of flexing with temperature swings and impacts.
In pliability testing, treated shingles — both new and aged — passed with no failures, while untreated shingles failed repeatedly. Restored flexibility is the foundation of everything else a rejuvenated shingle does well.
Granule Retention Improved (ASTM D4977)
Granules are your shingle’s armor. They protect the asphalt underneath from UV degradation, and once they’re gone, aging accelerates fast.
In granule adhesion testing, treated aged shingles retained 84% more granules than untreated aged shingles. In the lab’s measurements, displaced granule weight dropped from 1.9 grams lost on untreated control to just 0.3 grams lost after treatment — essentially halting granule loss.
Water Vapor Transmission Reduced by 97% (ASTM E96)
A shingle’s job is to shed water. As shingles age and dry out, they become more porous and let more moisture through.
In water vapor transmission testing, treatment reduced water infiltration through aged shingles by 97%. That’s not a coating sitting on top of the shingle — that’s the shingle itself being restored and sealed.
Impact Resistance (UL 2218-Class 4)
UL 2218 is the industry’s steel-ball impact test — the same standard used to rate impact-resistant shingles. 2” steel balls are dropped from up to 20 feet onto the shingle surface, and the shingles are inspected for tears and cracks.
In testing, treated shingles — both new and aged — passed every impact with zero failures. The untreated control shingles did not; both untreated specimens tore under impact.
To be clear about what this is and isn’t: this was comparative product testing, not a product impact-class certification. But the pattern in the data is hard to miss — the treated shingles were the ones that held up.
90% Biobased — USDA Certified
Our formulation combines an SBS polymer with a bio-based ester, and it’s USDA BioPreferred certified at 90% biobased content (verified under ASTM D6866). Applied by licensed professional contractors, and engineered to penetrate and restore the asphalt — not just coat the surface.
The Test That Matters Most: Real Roofs, Real Weather, Real Years
Lab data tells you what a product can do. Field performance tells you what it actually does — through summers, winters, freeze-thaw cycles, and storm seasons.
